Hawthorn forward Jon Patton was seen in tears on the interchange bench after suffering a hamstring injury in the opening quarter of the club’s blockbuster clash against Collingwood.

Immediate fears were the 27-year-old had potentially ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) for the fourth time given his response on the bench.

Patton left the field in the early stages of the game after attempting to take a sliding mark, hobbling from the field and took his place on the bench.

Patton missed the entire 2019 season with the recovery from his third serious knee injury, with the former No.1 pick being traded to Hawthorn from GWS for a future fourth-round selection in last year’s off-season.

However, those fears were alleviated when Hawthorn’s football boss Graham Wright confirmed at quarter time Patton had suffered a hamstring injury.

“He hurt a hamstring in the marking contest out here on this wing. He‘s nicked that, so going to miss the rest of the game,” he told Channel 7.

“I don‘t think so (it’s a bad hamstring injury). He felt it in the marking contest. He actually continued on for a minute or so after it, then came off the ground. So we don’t think it’s real bad one, but obviously bad enough to miss and probably miss a week or two.”

A freak burn kept the key forward out of Round 4 clash with North Melbourne.
