Why is it always Max Gawn that’s used as the stepladder?

The star Demons ruckman will soon find himself on another poster for the wrong reasons after another AFL player took a spectacular mark over him.

And Cody Weightman’s effort on Saturday night might be the best of 2021 yet.

As the Bulldogs kicked the ball towards half-forward, 178cm Weightman flew from the side and produced an enormous leap over the right shoulder over 208cm Gawn.

Most importantly, he hung onto the mark despite taking the ball above his head, spinning in mid air and hitting the MCG turf hard.

“That is going to make a great footy card,” Geelong legend Jimmy Bartel told 3AW Football.

There have been an array of quality mark of the year contenders this season, but Weightman’s effort is arguably the best yet.

And if he does win mark of the year, it’d be the second in three years that Gawn has featured in after Eagle Liam Ryan famously soared over the Demons ruckman in 2019.
