The Demons have pencilled in a December date to celebrate their drought-breaking premiership triumph with their Melbourne-based fans.

The club on Monday released a statement said it would look to hold a premiership celebration event for members and supports on Sunday December 5 at the MCG.

All members of Melbourne’s premiership team, as well as senior coach Simon Goodwin, will be in attendance.

The announcement comes after the Victorian government revealed plans to significantly ease Covid-enforced restrictions once the state hits the 90 per cent double dose vaccination figure.

Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday announced major events may proceed with no attendee caps or density limits for the fully vaccinated once 90 per cent of Victorians aged 12 and over are fully vaccinated. The indicative date provided by the government for that milestone is November 24.

The Dees — and the premiership cup — were presented to Perth-based fans the morning after the AFL Grand Final, but December’s event will give Victorian-based supporters the first opportunity to unite and celebrate the victory with players and coaches together.

“This event is incredibly important to us, as it is the first chance our players, coaches and the wider club will have to thank our supporters for their amazing support and loyalty,” said Demons chief executive Gary Pert, who added the event would be a “historic occasion”.

“The entire finals series we were conscious of just how tough it was back in Victoria and that the one thing we could do for our supporters was to bring the cup home to Melbourne.

“Our supporters have been unbelievably loyal and patient for a long period of time, particularly over the last two years while we have battled the impacts of the global pandemic.

“We have said all along that as soon as restrictions allow, we would make it a priority to bring the club together to celebrate the 2021 premiership and to thank our supporters for the incredible role they played in making this premiership possible.”

Pert said the key priority for the club was to create and hold an event “appropriately and in a safe environment”.

“This will be the first time that we are able to present the premiership cup to our supporter base and I can’t wait for everyone to have the opportunity to celebrate together,” he said.

“The MCC have been fantastic and are working directly with the Health Department on how many members and supporters we will be able to have attend.

“We will keep our members and supporters informed of all the details and how to secure their tickets once we have confirmation from the MCC and the State Government.”

The Demons emphatically defeated the Western Bulldogs by 74 points in last month’s Grand Final, claiming the club’s first premiership since 1964.
