Jacob Weitering or Jeremy Cameron – Which player is more important to their team?

Carlton’s Weitering is one of the premier key defenders in the competition and the Blues lack defensively whenever he is not there.

Geelong’s Cameron is a star forward who has the aerobic ability to get up the ground and be damaging in other areas, not just around forward 50.

Weitering was superb on Geelong veteran Tom Hawkins on Saturday night, finishing his side’s 13-point loss with 19 disposals, 12 marks and a game-high 11 intercepts.

Cameron was the match-winner for the Cats, booting five goals from 17 disposals and nine marks.

SEN Breakfast’s Tim Watson and Garry Lyon discussed who they believe to be more important to their respective side.

Watson: “Jeremy Cameron, is he more important to Geelong than Jacob Weitering is to Carlton?”

Lyon: “I would go with the forward over the defender because I’m biased.

“What would you go for?”

Watson: “In terms of importance to Carlton, and a team, I think that Weitering is more important to Carlton than what Cameron is to Geelong.”

Lyon: “They play each other again in Round 15 – Weitering has had Tom Hawkins’ measure, one of the few, and did again (on the weekend).

“When they play the next time, would you swing Weitering onto Cameron?”

Watson: “No, I wouldn’t.

“He (Weitering) won’t have the wheels, he wouldn’t be able to go the distance with him (Cameron).”

Lyon: “Which is one of the reasons why the role that has been developed for Jeremy Cameron in the past 18 months to two years is so significant because he just doesn’t stay at home.

“In the old days, ‘Hawk’ (Hawkins) at full-forward, Cameron at centre half-forward, you’d go, ‘Let’s swing Weitering onto Cameron’.

“But not now because Jeremy says, ‘Ok, let’s go, I’ll take you up to the back pocket’.”

Carlton vice-captain Weitering has made the last four All-Australian squads and is a two-time Blues best and fairest.

Former Giants star Cameron is a three-time All-Australian, one-time Coleman Medallist, and a premiership player with the Cats.
